China has launched a first-of-its-kind internet cafe exclusively for teenagers with internet filtering software.

The cafe in Beijing promises a maximum online time of two hours so that teenagers’ productive time is not wasted, the People’s Daily reported.

The internet cafe claims to be a ‘learning fairyland’ and has set up computers in pairs so that ‘young people can exchange learning experiences face-to-face’.

The cafe, however, has sparked off a public debate with many netizens saying it would provide opportunities to youth to try out new things.

Though some said they are thinking about sending their children to such a place, others are worried that teenagers with poor judgement will log on to improper sites if no controls are exercised.

The internet bar for kids is ‘well-intentioned’ but strong supervision is needed, Chen Zhanjiang, a sociology professor at Xiangtan University in Hunan Province, was quoted as saying.

Facebook grabs Hot Potato

Posted on August 21, 2010 by Cyber Yogi | No Comments

Facebook has acquired Hot Potato in a move that could help further its move into location-based services.

Hot Potato announced the deal on its blog Friday but did not reveal the purchase price.

Hot Potato aims to let people share what they’re doing with friends and connect with other people doing the same thing. People visit the page and choose the beginning of a sentence like “I’m attending…” or “I’m listening to…” and then fill in the rest of the sentence. They then join a group of people who have posted similar ideas. The group can share photos and videos and ask each other questions.

Users can also create whole new categories by writing an entire sentence following “I’m.”

Hot Potato has stopped signing up new users and its existing users will have to download any information and content they want to keep. In about a month, Hot Potato plans to delete all user data and won’t transfer it to Facebook.

The service was already linked to Facebook in that Hot Potato can look for friends who use the service through their Facebook logins. People can also link their profiles to their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Sony Ericsson India today launched Android 1.6 powered Xperia X8 . Today at a press conference in Bangalore, Sony Ericsson also unveiled a couple of other handsets like the Aspen, the Cedar, the Zylo and the Spiro. Anurag Kontu, the Head of Marketing of SE India, also revealed that the Android powered X10 line-up, comprising of the Xperia X10, Xperia X10 Mini and the Xperia X10 Mini Pro would be getting updates to Android 2.1 in Q3 (which essentially translates to “in a couple of weeks”). Also, thanks to a software update, the X10 will now be able to shoot HD videos.

The X8 has been positioned between the X10 and the X10 Mini and even design-wise it justifies that position. The X8 has a 3-inch screen, a 3.2MP camera (with no flash) and will be launched with Android 1.6 and SE’s 4-corner UI that we’d seen on the X10 Mini. The UI seemed usable and smooth, although surprisingly not as responsive as the X10 Mini.

The phone will be hitting markets in a couple of weeks and SE will be announcing the prices along side. Watch this space for updates.

Power Problem in INSAT 4B

Posted on August 14, 2010 by Cyber Yogi | No Comments

The Insat-4B communication satellite is facing a power supply problem leading to 50 percent of its transponders being switched off, parliament was informed Thursday.

Replying to question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of Science and Technology Prithviraj Chavan said that on July 7, the satellite suffered an anomaly in its power supply from one of the two solar arrays.

‘An interim measure has been taken by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to restore the services on two affected transponders,’ he said.

The power supply glitch has affected some direct-to-home (DTH) transmission players in the country.

Microsoft has started to sent out invitations for the launch of Internet Explorer 9 Beta on September 15 in San Francisco. The previews released for IE9 till now lacked the main features like bookmarks, search and history. The beta launch in September is expected to include the major features and other new features including the ones already included in the previews.

Speed and Standard

IE9 will focus on speed and standard as HTML5, CSS3 and many other new things are being introduced to make internet browsing experience better than before.
IE9 will also have:
# Psychedelic Browsing
# Hamster Dance Revolution
# SVG Dice
# IETrade
# Enhanced DOM Capabilities

IE9 will make use of GPU acceleration for HTML5 graphics. IE9 will also incorporate CSS3 features. Microsoft has implemented Chakra JavaScript engine directly into the browser rather than as a separated engine accessed via DOM.

User Interface

Speculations about the user interface have surfaced the internet, suggesting a Chrome like tabs-on-top interface, or the ribbon-like interface used in Microsoft Office. Another suggestion says that IE9 will have the Zune/Windows Phone 7 “Metro” look. Microsoft has been very tight lipped about the details of the user interface.

Anyway, we have to wait for Sep 15 for a detailed review, hope you will be here with me ;)
